Now, things have changed.

In a short three months, the U.S. has gone from a declared unemployment rate of 3.6% to a real unemployment rate topping 22%. And, that number is growing. Over 36.5 million have been laid off or let go since the start of the COVID 19 outbreak. Many companies are partially operational, temporarily shut down or now permanently out of business. This will change the labor market dramatically going forward and present opportunities for employers in the coming months.

Keep in Touch with Laid Off Employees

If you have laid off employees during the outbreak remember to stay in contact with those that you would like to call back when the opportunity arises. Being laid off is stressful and you do not want your best performers checking out other job opportunities if you will likely recall them when activity resumes. An occasional email or a phone call to those employees shows interest and may increase the likelihood of their availability or let you know that they have moved on when you are ready to call them back to work.
