High A Profile: Series Analysis

It’s a simple question, but the answer can sometimes be an indicator of your natural wiring. Do you feel like you’ve done a good job when your team or your boss expresses their appreciation or gives out kudos? Maybe when an organizational goal has been met? When you receive a glowing performance review? Or, is your measure of satisfaction internal? Do you know you’ve done a good job when you are satisfied regardless of the views or opinions of others? The source of self-confidence for a High A profile is internal in nature. You may sometimes feel accomplished and satisfied although others see it quite differently. You may know that you have given your best and exceeded personal expectations although you didn’t reach the established goal or the project did not come off as planned. In contrast, you may feel that your performance, while good or adequate, was still not all that it could have been even though your team or manager may be more than satisfied with the outcome. Why celebrate with the team when you know you could have personally done better? For a High A profile, sometimes the most difficult person to please is you. It can be challenging to coach a High A profile who seems oblivious to the concerns of management or other team members. A step in the right direction would be to at least affect High A buy-in to the team goals. The High A profile responds well to empowering questions. How would you proceed? If you were in charge of this project – what would you do? How can we realistically attain this goal? Empowering questions of that nature motivate the High A profile to champion the project. In effect, it becomes their project plan or idea though their modifications. That is when you know that the internally motivated High A person is engaged – when they see the team plan or organizational goal as their own. Tailor your coaching to the profile for the most effective results.
